Modelling animal populations in changing landscapes

چکیده
Models of Mobile Animal Populations (MAP models) simulate long-term land use changes, population trends and patterns of biological diversity on landscapcs of lo3-lo5 ha. MAP models can incorporate information about past land-use pattcrns and management practices and can project future pattcrns based on management plans. We illustrate this approach with an cxamplc of how implerncntation of a US. Forest Service management plan at the Savannah River Sitc in South Carolina, U.S.A., might influence population trcnds of Bachman's Sparrow Airnophila aestivalis, a relatively rare and declining species In southeastern pine forcsts. In this casc, a managerncnt plan, largcly designed to improve cond~tions for an endangercd specics, Red-cockaded Woodpeckcr Picoides borealis, may have a negative impact, at least in thc short term, on anothcr species of management conccrn, Bachman's Sparrow. In a parallel processing version of thc MAP models, a single landscapc that would ordinarily be too large or dctailed to be simulated on a single computer is subdividcd into a number of smaller landscapes, and each landscape is simulated in parallel, cither on a single multi-tasking machine or on a group of nctworkcd machines. With this approach we are attempting to detcrmine just how large a landscape must be bcfore thc dynamics of a population within it are morc or less indepcndent of factors beyond thc landscape boundaries.

Generation of Temporally and Spatially Heterogeneous Landscapes for Models of Population Dynamics
There is an increased interest in the use of spatial explicit modelling techniques in ecological research. One of the strength of this technique is the possibility to explicitly study the effect of environmental heterogeneity on the dynamics of populations or whole communities. Most of these studies focused on aspects of spatial heterogeneity, and studies focusing on environmental change employ...
متن کاملAnthropogenic landscape change promotes asymmetric dispersal and limits regional patch occupancy in a spatially structured bird population.
1. Local extinctions in habitat patches and asymmetric dispersal between patches are key processes structuring animal populations in heterogeneous environments. Effective landscape conservation requires an understanding of how habitat loss and fragmentation influence demographic processes within populations and movement between populations. 2. We used patch occupancy surveys and molecular data ...
متن کاملPrimates in Human-Modified and Fragmented Landscapes: The Conservation Relevance of Modelling Habitat and Disturbance Factors in Density Estimation
Accurate density estimations of threatened animal populations is essential for management and conservation. This is particularly critical for species living in patchy and altered landscapes, as is the case for most tropical forest primates. In this study, we used a hierarchical modelling approach that incorporates the effect of environmental covariates on both the detection (i.e. observation) a...
متن کاملMultiscale patterns of movement in fragmented landscapes and consequences on demography of the snail kite in Florida.
1. Habitat loss and fragmentation are major factors affecting vertebrate populations. A major effect of these habitat alterations is that they reduce movement of organisms. Despite the accepted importance of movement in driving the dynamics of many natural populations, movement of vertebrates in fragmented landscapes have seldom been estimated with robust statistical methods. 2. We estimated mo...
متن کاملUnderstanding Patchy Landscape Dynamics: Towards a Landscape Language
Patchy landscapes driven by human decisions and/or natural forces are still a challenge to be understood and modelled. No attempt has been made up to now to describe them by a coherent framework and to formalize landscape changing rules. Overcoming this lacuna was our first objective here, and this was largely based on the notion of Rewriting Systems, also called Formal Grammars. We used compli...
